On Sunday, we went to the Yabby Farm. A yabby is a cross-breed between a prawn and a crab. In hokkien dialect, its called a "Heh Poh". Dad says that its a big-head prawn. We wanted to go on Saturday (5 apr) but it was very cloudy with some light rain. So we abandoned our original plan and went shopping instead. When we reached the Yabby Farm, we were surprised to saw a big sign that wrote "Closed until 5 Apr". Luckily we didn't visit the farm on Sat as it was closed. Things happen for a reason. Later I found out from the owner that the farm was closed due to a storm which resulted in power failure and fallen huge trees. The place was quite a mess still and the owner was clearing the fallen trees near the Yabby ponds. The public toilet was also crushed by a gigantic fallen tree. So we had to relieve ourselves behind some bushes.. hehe!
Sean and dad began to start the BBQ fire so that by lunch time, we could BBQ our bacon and ham for lunch. After settling down (tidying up the place and finding a safe spot for baby), we started to fish for Yabby. Within 5mins, mom shouted "I've got one!" and we were all very shocked! I remembered mom playing "Mario Party" (Game Cube) and she was always the one who caught the most fish in one of those challenges! So she does have a talent for fishing! Within a few mins, Sean caught the 2nd Yabby, followed by Dad. I was frantically running around and taking pictures of their "prized" catches! So I decided to let my hair down (nah.. actually its to tie up my hair) and told Shannyn that I will catch a big one for her and began to get my hands dirty! Not long after, I caught one Yabby .. and a really big fat one! In fact, it was the Biggest Catch of the Day!! Haha!!
It was an extremely enjoyable experience! The entry fee to the farm was reasonable at AUD3 per adult and $20/kg of caught Yabby. At the end of the day (after spending 6h at the Yabby Farm), we caught about half a kilo of Yabby. Well.. all the Yabbies became our dinner. They tasted like prawns .. but was much softer and had less meat.
