Sean's grandma (Wai Po - mother side) passed away last week.
Two months ago, we made a last minute decision to visit her in Malaysia after Ah Leh Gor Gor emailed Sean that Wai Po was very weak and had been bedridden for months.
We booked our airtickets, applied for leave, packed within a few hours and rushed to Malaysia.
It was not a holiday.
We reached there after more than a day of travel. Boy, it was tiring.
When we finally reached Wai Po's house, she was lying in bed, simply staring into blank space.
I wanted to cry when I saw her. She looked so weak and fragile. When Shannyn saw her, she was scared of her and cried. It took her a few days before she got used to Wai Po.
She sang for Wai Po and to our surprise, Wai Po sang with Shannyn with her weak voice!
We visited Wai Po everyday when we were in Malaysia. We wanted to spend as much time with her as possible.
It was a long journey back. We took a midnight bus and reached the airport at about 4am. Our flight was at 9am.
After a quick breakfast, we pulled together a few sofa benches in the airport and slept till 7am. At 8am, we checked in and realised that we had to travel in a mono-rail to the departure terminal. As a result, we didn't have time to shop at all. Not that we are in the mood to shop anyway. It didn't feel like a holiday anyway.
Luckily, we made it in time for the flight. When we reached home, it was 1am, after one whole day of travel.
Last week, there was a call in the morning. No one dared to pick up the phone so early in the morning. I picked up the phone and didn't feel good about it.
It was Sean's mum.
She sounded tired and depressed. She tried to maintain her calm as she broke the news to me.
I didn't know what to say.
We will miss Wai Po and she will forever be in our hearts.
